Pysanky were also buried or left on gravesites. I have seen several enquiries over the years, for a funerary pysanky design, from mourners who wanted to honor the deceased.
If you click on this image you can download a pdf file of the design and explanation.

How To Make a "Hungarian Writing Tool"

12/22/2012

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS KISTKA IS USED WITH MELTED WAX ONLY!
In Hungary special writing tools are sold, but you can make one yourself.
You need:
1.   A little copper tube of about 2-2.5 cm long.  You can use a small piece of thin copper sheet(some craft stores sell this).
2.   Roll it on a thick and long needle.
3.  Take a piece of stick the size of a pencil, cut in one end and insert the tube in the gap so         that they make the shape of "T".
4.  Fasten the tube with a piece of thread.
5.  When writing the patterns with this tool first hold it in the warm wax for a couple of seconds so that the tube can get warm enough.
6.  When you take it out of the wax, knock it gently to the edge of the pot to remove the unnecessary wax off or you will have dots and spots on your egg where you did not plan to.

Washing Back with a Mop Brush, Detail Brush or Toothbrush

12/13/2012

Picturesoft, broad, rounded brush
Some artists like to “wash back” each color rather than over lapping, dipping  the egg from color to color.  The advantage of this is that you get to see the white canvas (space) that you have left on the egg, when you wash back.   Another advantage is that you can see if there are any flaws in waxing or missed color; these can then be touched up. I have made mistakes with forgetting to dip into a dye color and then needed to remove the mistaken dye, so that I could go back to the missed color. I wash the eggback using a solution of Ivory Liquid and water.
Washing back with large soft mop brush should not disturb the already waxed lines.
Mix a small dollar store pump bottle with one part Ivory Liquid,  to two parts water.  Pump an amount onto the brush and wash back the color.  Wash back over a sink and finally rinse the egg well with cold water.  Before continuing with the newest waxing and dye color, examine the egg for any flaws, such as missed waxing or missed color.

DETAIL BRUSH     If you find that you have a color missing,  you can use a detail brush to fill in the bit and then wax over it. Be sure to wash new brushes before using, because they contain a  stiffener to hold the bristles in place.

Varnishes-the Choice is Yours

Make sure that any varnish you chose is OIL-BASED, not water-based!  Using water-based will wash the dyes off of the shell and ruin your pysanky!

Practice Strokes and Patterns on a Paper Plate
I practice strokes on the back of a paper plate.  I also advise students to use paper plate "practice" before writing on the egg.
