Eloise's Lathe Advice

My 2 Cents:  by Eloise
Of the 9 Marker-Lathes I displayed at the PysankyUSA 2013 Retreat, my rankings are as follows:

#1 the (5) Blue Eggers Helper      #2       (6) English Marker

I started egging with the Blue Egger’s Helper, which may be why I prefer it-it is light weight, and lets you mark the ends for proper placement to drill for emptying and will fit all sizes of eggs.  The English Marker is versatile, but has a lot of parts which might get lost or break.  However its twist dial is great (not as accurate as Alcraft’s), but it is fun and also light weight. Good luck, have fun testing them.
With practice and the proper instruction, like taking Gene’s incredible PUSA Retreat Class, all will work.
I also own the two additional markers #’s 10 & 11.   10 is an older and unavailable version; however I include it here for those who may
have it and not the instructions. #11 is an odd contraption.  I find it difficult to operate, but I know one person who swears by it.  It too is unavailable, but I have included them for anyone who may need the printed instructions.   #12 is just for fun

Packaging an Egg for Mailing

A clever way to package an egg for shipping!  I use this every time  I ship.

Picture
You will need a special can opener that does not leave sharp edges.  They come in different models, manual and battery operated.  You can Google "can opener that does not leave sharp edges" to find the item online.

Picture
I run the can and lid through a dishwash cycle to sterilize it.
You may cleverly decorated the can, using fabric, paper, or contact paper.

Pieter From the Netherlands Suggests Sanding Goose Eggs

8/4/2013

Pieter from the  Netherlands,  always sands each goose egg before he creates the brilliant Sorbian Eggs, that you see here.  Follow his instructions:
" Starting with 150 grit sand paper, then 220, 300, 400, 600, 800, 1000 and finally 1200. This way the eggs become extremely smooth and the 1200 grit makes them shine. I use the same sand paper as I use for polishing my soap stone sculptures. It takes some time to sand an egg, but it's so much easier to draw straight lines on such a smooth surface."
Pieter recommends sanding the eggs outdoors being careful not to inhale the fine dust, which may cause serious lung problems. He normally places a wet towel on his lap while sanding the eggs out of doors.  The wet towel catches a lot of the dust. He advises making the sand paper wet, which can make the sanding process a bit harder. Finally, after polishing with the 1200 grit paper, a water and vinegar bath removes any residue.

The Art of Sorbian Eggs have been kept alive by a tiny Slavic minority in Germany, a long and intricate tradition of hand-painting Easter eggs with the help of feathers and wax.
Pieter learned his craft from the Master Sorbian artist Bärbel Lange,  from the little village called Lübbenau, in the east of Germany.
